Knoxville News Sentinel needed to dig deeper
I was disappointed in the Knoxville News Sentinel (KNS) editorial about sex education in Knox County Schools.
I’m not a KNS basher. Some of my conservative friends say it’s a liberal rag. I laugh because I remember what the Charlotte Observer was like, when I lived there in the late 1980s. That paper was comical, sort of a cross between the Washington Post and the old Pravda. But in all my time in Knoxville, KNS has covered my newsworthy activities faithfully and without prejudice. They have accurately printed my letters and I hope they will keep doing so.
But I was disappointed at the misstatements of fact in this editorial, as well as the failure to recognize and address the key issues. Perhaps it’s too much to expect. After all, I struggle to be competent on just one or two subjects. I can’t imagine having to become an expert on a new topic every day.
The most obvious error was the statement that Planned Parenthood (PP) “offers abortion services in some locations across the country but not in Knoxville.” In 2009, the KNS itself reported that PP “will dispense RU486, the ‘abortion pill,’ to women up to nine weeks pregnant.” On their website, PP lists “abortion services” as being offered in Knoxville.
Further, it has been widely reported that PP has directed all of their local affiliates to operate abortion clinics by 2013. That explains why PP’s former office at Downtown West was no longer big enough and they recently moved to a larger space.
Their status as an abortion clinic is a critical fact, because it means that PP stands to make a lot of money by marketing themselves in our schools. This is an outrageous conflict of interest that completely escaped the notice of KNS reporters and editors.
The editorial went on to say that PP’s website “linked to material that was inappropriate for the classroom and could be seen by some parents as offensive.” That’s an astonishing understatement that could have been written only by a person unfamiliar with the PP material. It would be like saying that Pat Summitt “has won a few ball games and could be considered by some fans as an adequate coach.”
Evidence of PP’s criminal behavior all over the US, including their institutional willingness to cover up sexual abuse of minor children, was completely ignored. Nor was it mentioned that PP routinely arranges for judicial bypasses that allow minors to get abortions behind their parents’ backs. Were these deliberate omissions or just plain sloppiness? No rational person could think them unworthy of mention.
The tone of the editorial suggested that the issue at stake was whether or not teens needed to know about sex. I don’t recall anybody on our side of the issue ever suggesting teens should be ignorant on matters of sex. We do, however, oppose the approach to sex that tells 13-year-old children that they might be ready for sex if they “trust each other,” “care about each other,” and “have fun together.” We object to PP’s “anything-goes” approach to sex. And I do mean anything.
To my knowledge, no KNS editor ever spoke with any of the parents about this matter. I don’t know if they interviewed the other side or not. Maybe KNS just takes at face value whatever Dr. McIntyre tells them. Maybe an ad hoc collection of parents just can’t overcome years and years of taxpayer-funded PP propaganda. Maybe KNS is a liberal rag and I’m too naive to see it.
I don’t know, but I have to think KNS could have written a more insightful piece had they bothered to do a little independent research. Speaking with some of the pro-family leaders who raised this issue might have been helped.
KNS, I love you, man, but you really needed to dig deeper on this one.
Pro Life in Knoxville | Witness against Planned Parenthood
Last week, the Pro-Life Coalition of East Tennessee (ProCET) organized a protest at a Planned Parenthood (PP) fundraiser in Knoxville. About 30 people came to peacefully witness against baby killing.
The Tomato Head restaurant was closed to everyone but PP, and probably 20 or 30 people attended their event. It was mostly an older crowd. Our ProCET group was much more diverse, ranging in age from 7 to 70.
A few of us held the CBR “Choice” signs, and passersby studied them very intently. Several people thanked us for being there, which we appreciated.
One man, probably in his mid to late 30’s, told us that many years ago he had gotten a girl pregnant. She had aborted without his consent. It was devastating; he even ended up on the streets for a while. He still misses that child. He said he was grateful for our presence and he and his friend encouraged us to “Keep it up!”
We are very grateful to Paul Simoneau and Lisa Morris of ProCET for organizing this and many other pro-life efforts in Knoxville.

Knoxville City of Life Declaration
People who attended the ProCET Rally for Life in East Knoxville were asked to sign the City of Life Declaration that is being circulated by Matthew Parsons. Parsons said that “the Declaration has been designed to bring people together for the common goal of making Knoxville a city where not only life, but abundant life can be achieved regardless of one’s race, class, or even one’s status as born or unborn.” The text of the Declaration is as follows:
We, the citizens and leaders of the Knoxville community, stand together in unity to oppose the presence of Planned Parenthood and the other abortion providers in our city. We commit to defend and promote a city of life. Today, we say to abortion providers, “Not in this Community … Not in any Community.”
Planned Parenthood: Secrecy, Deception, and Outright Lies
Here is a copy of Steve Arnold’s remarks at the ProCET rally in East Knoxville on February 20. Steve did a great job of documenting the way that Planned Parenthood does business. He described the secrecy that surrounded PP’s purchase of property on Cherry Street, the deception that is an integral part of PP’s “education” programs, and the documented cases of PP’s failures to report evidence of sexual abuse of minor children.
Steve’s conclusion:
Planned Parenthood is an organization built on secrecy, deception and outright lies. All through its history, and all across the country, Planned Parenthood has consistently demonstrated that truth does not matter, parent’s rights are not legitimate, and child predators are to be protected.
East Knoxville Rallies Against Planned Parenthood
Knoxville, Tenn./Feb 20, 2010 — East Knoxville rallied Saturday afternoon against the relocation of the Planned Parenthood (PP) abortion clinic to Cherry Street. A crowd of about 200 gathered at the True Vine Baptist Church, just across the street from the clinic. The rally was organized by the ProLife Coalition of East Tennessee (ProCET) and a number of East Knoxville churches.
Pastor Sharon Welch of New Living Faith Community Church delivered the opening prayer and call to action. ProCET spokesperson Lisa Morris highlighted PP’s founding, history, and current status as America’s largest abortion provider. Morris described PP founder Margaret Sanger as a devout racist who implemented a sterilization program, called the “Negro Project,” which targeted African American women and others she deemed as “undesirable.”
Morris then read a statement of support from Dr. Alveda King, a pro-life activist who is also the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King stated that even though African-Americans make up 12% of the population, a full 35% of aborted babies are Black. According to Dr. King, 78% of PP clinics are located in minority communities, and African-Americans are the only minority in America whose population is declining.
Steve Arnold of ProCET described PP’s deceptions relative to the purchase of the property on Cherry Street. Arnold said that this was part of a pattern of PP deception, citing their practice of providing abortions to children without parental consent, their educational programs that encourage deviant sexual behavior, and even their pattern of covering up the sexual abuse of under-age children by adult males.
Pastor Jean Delaney of announced a prayer vigil to be held in front of the PP clinic every Friday during Lent. Those interested in participating were directed to go to www.40daysknoxville.com/vigil or call 567-1245.
Other speakers included Pastor Barbara McKinney of Clayborn Temple AME Church, Pastor Johnny Watson of AME Bethel Church, Pastor Joe Maddox of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Andy Rittenhouse of First Baptist Concord, Monsignor Xavier Mankel of the Knoxville Diocese, and Pastor Joseph Parker of Campbell Chapel AME Church (Pulaski). Statements were read to the crowd from Gubernatorial candidates Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey and US Rep. Zach Wamp.
Following the prepared remarks, most of the crowd walked over to the clinic, stood on the sidewalks along both Cherry Street and Washington Avenue, and prayed silently for about 30 minutes. Many held signs of protest, e.g., “Planned Parenthood – Bad for Babies” and “Women Do Regret Abortion.”
Following the brief prayer vigil, a smaller group assembled inside the True Vine Baptist Church to preview the new Maafa 21 documentary, which details PP’s racist history. Pastor Parker also showed a portion of the movie “Tilly,” which is based on the Frank Peretti book of the same name.
