CBR Announces Key States Initiative (KSI) for 2014

KSI Trucks

KSI Trucks. (Click to enlarge.)

CBR is at it again!  We have launched our 2014 Key States Initiative (KSI), perhaps the most dramatic and effective pro-life voter education project every conceived!

CBR will drive large box trucks bearing graphic, oversize images of first-trimester aborted embryos and fetuses in major cities, as a way of educating voters about preborn children and what abortion does to them.  CBR is operating the trucks in several states with tight U.S. Senate races to reach out to voters in advance of the November 4 elections.

These images are indispensable because they communicate to voters at a glance the crucial fact that abortion is a brutal act of violence that kills a baby.

The media describes pro-life candidates as “ultraconservative” and “extreme,” but they describe pro-abortion candidates as “moderate” on abortion. We will show voters the truth, so they will know that killing babies is extreme.  Saving them is not extreme; it is compassionate.

DRIVERS NEEDED

If you would like to participate in this historic effort, please let us know.  No special license is required.  You must be 21 years old and have a good driving record.

Drivers must be available to travel to a nearby state, teeming with voters who need to know what abortion is and does.  Immediate need for drivers willing to go to Arkansas and Louisiana.  Alaska, North Carolina, and other states may also be targeted in the coming weeks.

Teaching the teachers about abortion

CBR volunteers show what "family planning" looks like to NEA delegates.

CBR volunteers show what “family planning” looks like to NEA delegates.

On Monday morning, July 1st, delegates of the National Education Association’s (NEA) annual assembly were in for an eyeful as they made their way to the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

CBR volunteers from all over Georgia stood at the intersection of Andrew Young International Boulevard and Marietta Street with CBR’s handheld “Choice” signs, which depict images of early-term aborted fetuses. Our group’s positions were adjusted throughout the morning to adapt to changing traffic patterns.

CBR was working alongside other pro life organizations, including Georgia Right to Life (GRTL) and Pro Life Educators of America (PLEA), to bring a message to the NEA: adopt a neutral position on abortion.

“We are not asking the NEA delegates to do a one-eighty and change our union’s abortion position and activism to being pro-life,” said Bob Pawson, Director of PLEA and  NEA member, “We are asking that our union be verifiably neutral and totally non-involved regarding abortion. And stop hiding their advocacy behind euphemistic language such as ‘reproductive freedom’ or ‘all methods of family planning,’” Pawson said.

CBR works to effectively dismantle such euphemisms. While other pro life advocates used text signs to exhort the NEA to neutralize it’s pro-abortion position, the graphic pictures we used showed exactly what certain methods of “reproductive freedom” and “family planning” do to unborn children (and future students).

The Truth Truck made several rounds in front of the CNN News Center in Atlanta

The Truth Truck made several rounds in front of the CNN News Center in Atlanta.

NEA members were also shown the true meaning of these genteel phrases by billboard-sized abortion images on CBR’s “Truth Truck.” Our truck made rounds in the Georgia World Congress Center vicinity throughout the mornings and afternoons of July 1 and July 2, insuring that as many NEA delegates as possible would be exposed to the brutality that their union’s official resolution currently supports.

“Normally, in America’s news media, when citizens hear or read press reports about teacher unions and picketing, it is the union DOING the picketing; usually demanding more money. This event is one of those unusual instances in which the NEA Teacher Union is the TARGET OF PICKETING; ironically, by NEA members, taxpayer-parents, and students. The very constituencies which the NEA leadership touts itself as supposedly serving,” said Pawson.

While we received some of the usual irate responses, several passersby paused to observe and ask questions about the images. One driver, a young African-American woman, rolled down her window to address one of our volunteers when stopped at the traffic light:

“Excuse me, is that a real picture?”

“Yes, it is”

“Awe.” She was audibly saddened by what she saw.

Much conversation was overheard among pedestrians regarding abortion and the NEA’s stance on abortion. While some doubted that the NEA took a pro abortion stance, others indicated that they were previously unaware of the fact before encountering the message being shown to them. Pro life NEA members in particular expressed appreciation of CBR’s message and our assistance in reforming the teacher’s union.

Abortion pictures change minds in unexpected places (video)

We were thrilled to meet Alyssa Massaro, one of the pro-life student leaders at Georgia Tech, because CBR played a key role in her journey over to our side.

In 2004, Alyssa was 12 years old and living with her family in Cheshire, Connecticut.  That summer, two of our truth trucks drove past Cheshire on the way to Maine.  It was part of our Key States Initiative (KSI) that focused on nearly 20 battleground states for controlling the White House and the Senate.

I saw the image and I knew it for what it was.  I burst out crying, because I knew that was a child and it had been murdered.
***
That is one of the experiences that fired me up the most.  I don’t know if I would have seen [the truth] any other way.

In 2004, we were just on the road to Maine.  To our knowledge, Connecticut was not a key state.  We were wrong, because God had picked out a 12-year-old girl in Cheshire to see the truth.  In her own words …

Key States Initiative (KSI) deploys to Ohio … Help make history!

side hands on dime

Pictures of abortion help voters see that being pro-life is not extremism; killing babies is extremism.

CBR has deployed three Key States Initiative (KSI) truck teams to Ohio, to make sure abortion is part of the political debate in that key state.  Lord willing, they will operate in northern Ohio until Election Day.  More about KSI hereMedia coverage here.

Here is an encouraging word from Tom Herring, one of our volunteer drivers:

Driving a CBR truck was one of the most fulfilling pro-life activities I’ve ever done.  …  The likelihood of those teens [who saw the trucks] choosing abortion, or choosing abortion advocates to represent them in government, has been radically diminished.

We desperately need drivers in Ohio.  We’ll get you there, we’ll house you, and we’ll feed you.  No special license required.  We’ll train you to drive!  You must be at least 21 years old and have a good driving record.  Please join our tream.  Contact Leslie Sneddon Call 207-607-3488 or e-mail her at lsneddon@cbrinfo.org.

If you can’t go to Ohio yourself, would you send us a tank of truck fuel ($350)?  Because of our matching donor, your gift will double as soon as you confirm the online gift!  That’s two tanks of fuel for the price of one!  Who else will give you that deal today?  Please give now.  Then e-mail us at Fletcher@ProLifeOnCampus.com to confirm the match.  Thanks so much!

Did Presidential candidates seek out CBR trucks?

Presidential Motorcade

Barack Obama’s motorcade passes one of the CBR truth trucks in Madison, Wisconsin.

CBR staged a real coup last week by “truthing” both Presidential candidates, Pres. Obama in Wisconsin and Gov. Romney in Virginia!

In Madison, Wisconsin, Pres. Barack Obama’s motorcade passed within 30 feet of one of our abortion billboard trucks in Madison, Wisconsin (photo at right).  The driver was our super volunteer Jim Davis.  Both before and after Pres. Obama’s rally, thousands of Obama supporters were forced to walk past our enormous GAP display. We immediately seized the opportunity and flanked the corridor with handheld “Choice” signs, which we held aloft on both sides of the walkway leading past the GAP display.  Story here.  They were furious at us for raining on their parade.

At almost the same hour on the same day, another abortion billboard truck, driven by CBR super volunteer Bubba Gene Garrett, was parked along the access route to a campaign rally for Gov. Mitt Romney and Cong. Paul Ryan in Fishersville, VA (photo below).  Thousands of Romney/Ryan supporters passed this truck.  In fact, so did the Romney/Ryan motorcade.  Cong. Ryan had his window open, waving and gaping at the abortion photos on the truck.

Thank you for supporting our work.  Your gifts make it possible to reach our culture with live-saving truth.  Please pray for our nation.  And please keep on giving, because the more you give, the more people we can reach.  People who need to know.

Why not double your money? (And save babies at the same time.)

KSI Virginia

Your support will help keep this truck on the road, saving babies and encouraging pro-life voters.

We have less than 9 weeks to get pro-lifers out to vote in 4 key states!

Every dollar you invest in our voter education project is instantly matched, all the way up to $75,000!  You give $50, our matching donor gives $50 more.  You give $5,000, our matching donor gives $5,000 more.  For your support, here’s what you get:

  • Immediate 100% return on investment.  Will your 401-K do as well?
  • Save babies’ lives.  Pictures of abortion save lives.  Happy mothers have told us so, over and over again.
  • Get pro-lifers out to vote!  If we don’t, we could lose all the pro-life gains we have made since 2010.  And we could lose much, much more.

The pro-abortion health care bill, commonly called ObamaCare, will transfer billions of your tax dollars to the abortion industry.  That’s “billions” with a “b”.  If we fail to stop this insanity, our children and grandchildren will pay the price.  The ones who live will pay with their taxes; the others will pay with their lives.

I’m asking you to make your voice heard by supporting this important project.

Remember, every dollar you invest in this critical project is instantly matched, all the way up to $75,000!  So be sure to designate your gift for “Other” and type in “KSI”.  Or just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.  Let’s raise $10,000 by the end of this week!

The trucks are in place; the rest is up to you.  Please support KSI now, for we urgently need your help.

Why can’t the media get enough of this project?

Nicole is interviewed by WUSA news anchor Peggy Fox.

CBR Virginia Director Nicole Cooley is interviewed by WUSA news anchor Peggy Fox.

Why are the media all over this project?  The Key State Initiative (KSI), our pro-life voter education project, is on the road in 4 states.  The media are biting!

That’s important because  media coverage helps get our message out, whether they show the pictures or not.  If they show the pictures, viewers get to see what abortion is and does.  If not, viewers learn that abortion is so horrifying, it can’t be shown.  Either way, our side wins.

Make your voice heard!  Truck fuel is very expensive.  Truck repairs aren’t cheap, either.  Travel costs are up.  We’ve been on the road for 7 weeks; only 9 more to go!  But we need your help.  Unless we hear from you soon, we’ll have to park the trucks and wait.  Yuck!  We hate to wait because babies are dying and Election Day is coming fast.  So please support KSI right now!

The Key State Initiative (KSI), our pro-life voter education project, is on the road in 4 states!  More on KSI here and here.  While the media focus on pocketbook issues, we are sending a pro-life message all the way to Washington!   We haven’t forgotten the daily carnage, and we won’t let them forget, either!

Here is an encouraging word from Tom Herring, Co-Director of the Anti-Choice Project.  He drove one of our KSI truth trucks for a week!

Driving a CBR truck in Iowa was one of the most fulfilling pro-life activities I’ve ever done.  I wish I could do it 40 hours a week.  …  The enormous graphic display on the side of box-body truck is perhaps the best way to expose the violent act of abortion.

The gaping-mouth stares of teenagers – seeing abortion for the first time – were the most rewarding to me.  Most of our youth have consciences which are still functioning.  …  The likelihood of those teens choosing abortion, or choosing abortion advocates to represent them in government, has been radically diminished.

Thank you, Tom!

“Fetus” vs “Child”

Choice Sign 2

Choice sign exhibiting “1st Trimester (10-week) Aborted Fetus”

We often hear from pro-lifers who question our use of the word “fetus” on our GAP signs, Choice signs, and RCC truth trucks.  “Fetus” is the word used by pro-aborts to dehumanize the preborn child, so why would we want to use their word?

First, it is critical to restore meaning to the words that pro-aborts are fond of using, so that when they use their words in public, our side gets the benefit.   The other side is quite fond of the word “fetus,” because it conjures up something subhuman in the minds of so many people.  They will never agree to use our word, so we must restore meaning to their word.  When pro-aborts say the word “fetus,” people who have seen our signs won’t think of a formless lump of cells; they will remember the picture of a human being with arms and legs and fingers and toes.  If we restore meaning to the word, the other side can’t use it to confuse people.

Second, we only have a few seconds with people as we pass them with our trucks.  When they see the truck, we want them to say something like, “Wow, I didn’t know killing a fetus meant killing a being with arms and legs and fingers and toes.”  If we flash the word “child” instead, people might think of infanticide, not abortion.  It won’t make sense to them.  By using the word that they are most familiar with, we reduce the amount of time necessary to convey the message.

Third, we want to reinforce in people that the word “fetus” is just another stage of life … as in embryo, fetus, infant, toddler, adolescent, teenager, young adult, middle aged adult, senior citizen, geezer, etc.

Fourth, we can’t force them to use our word, so perhaps a form of jujutsu might be more effective.  The other side has all the worldly power behind it (the media, the education system, the news media, the entertainment industry, etc.).   Jujutsu is a martial art in which one seeks to manipulate the opponent’s force against himself rather than confronting him with one’s own force.  We want to take over their words so that when pro-aborts try to use them, it turns to our benefit.

Bottom line:  The other side dehumanized the word “fetus;” we are restoring its humanity.

Can we ever use the word, “child?”  Yes, of course!  Suppose  I am talking to a pro-abort who asserts that abortion may be justified based on poverty, personal choice, etc.  I would first show him a photo of a 1st-trimester abortion.  We have to define that word “abortion.”   Then I would trot out the toddler, i.e., ask if it would be OK to kill a 2-year old child for the same reason.   That way, I can focus his attention on the real issue, which is not poverty, choice, etc.  The real issue is “What is the unborn?”

But later in the conversation, when he goes back to “choice” and “rights,” I might force him back to the main point by saying something like, “A parent does not have a right to kill his own child.”  When I use the word “child,” he cannot dispute the statement, so he has to dispute the notion that the fetus is a child.  But our signs use the word “fetus” because this word, juxstaposed with the photos, helps us make our case that the fetus is, in fact, a human child.

In this way, I am using the word “child” in conversation to do the same thing that we used the word “fetus” to do on our signs.  In both cases, we are refocusing our audience on the key point, “What is the unborn?”

CBR: lead story on DC news!

Nicole is interviewed by WUSA news anchor Peggy Fox.

Nicole is interviewed by WUSA news anchor Peggy Fox.

CBR’s Key States Initiative (KSI) was the lead story on WUSA-TV in Washington, DC on Monday night.  Virginia Project Director (and truck-driver extraordinaire) Nicole Cooley was interviewed on-camera by news anchor Peggy Fox.  It was the lead story on the evening news!  Links:

Nicole gave an excellent interview.  WUSA highlighted some of the comments on their Facebook page.  Amanda Reyes wrote:

I don’t want my children seeing this.

But Claire Lauderdale Gardner said:

These pro-lifers are showing the truth of what abortion does.  It is tough to explain to kids because it is the gruesome murder of an unborn baby.  And most kids git that it’s killing a baby no matter what a parent’s views are.

Another story popped up on our KSI trucks in Iowa.

Are the men at Liberty University just more adept … ?

Students tell us that the opinion among Liberty U students was divided.  Some appreciated our efforts to expose the deeds of darkness (Ephesians 5:11); some did not.  That was not a surprise.

But several of our staff members noticed something very different about the reaction of Liberty University students to our presence.  The people who objected were almost all men.  They seemed to believe that they were all pro-life enough, and we shouldn’t bother them any more about it.  (They didn’t realize that one of our our primary goals was to bother them about abortion, so that they would do something about it.)  They listened politely to our explanations, but you could see the skepticism was still there.

The women, however, all seemed to get it.  They didn’t claim that their classmates were all pro-life.  They understood the need for students to see the pictures, even at a Christian school like Liberty.

Could it be that the men didn’t get it because, as a group, men are much more adept at hiding (from each other) their involvement with sex, pregnancy, and abortion?

We are not being critical in this regard; we are just being realistic.  CBR’s Executive Director Gregg Cunningham recalls listening to a broadcast of James Dobson’s radio program, during which Dr. Dobson interviewed six Christian college presidents.  Dr. Dobson asked them if they had ever seen a pregnant student on their campuses.  To a person, they said no.  To a person, they all believed this was evidence that their students were living chaste lives.  Dr. Dobson was incredulous.  We are not.

Perhaps the women need to speak, and the men need to listen up.

Another baby saved by Truth Truck

RCC-Atlanta-1

After seeing the images on the truck, she said, "I knew I had to choose life for my child."

We hear from lots of supporters (including my own mom) who tell us, “I love your work on campus, but I’m not so sure about your truck!”

Well, Mom, this baby’s for you!

Pro Life Strategy | How We Can Win

Medallion emphasizes the humanity of the Black slave.

Medallion emphasized to Londoners the humanity of the Black slave in 1787.

My talk last night at the Atlanta Right to Life was very well received, I think.  The subject was “Learning From the Past: How We Can Win.”  This is a similar talk to the one I gave to a group of pro-life Georgia Legislators a couple of years ago and the talk I gave to a group of pro-life Congressmen in DC.

This was a fairly easy audience.  We’ve been working with these folks to display abortion images for many years (GAP, RCC, etc.), so they are very familiar with the need to educate the public.  I didn’t need to convince them so much as to help solidify in their minds the connection between our work to educate the public using horrifying images and the work of other social reformers in history who achieved success using the same strategy.  Examples:

  • The anti-slave-trade movement in England (William Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson) used images to show the humanity of the Black slave and the inhumanity of the slave trade.
  • Abolistionists in this country used similar images, and later used photographs, to expose the injustice of slavery.
  • Lewis Hine, who was concerned about abusive child labor practices, took pictures of children working in coal mines and textile mills and turned them into a traveling display.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said that “America will not stop racism until America sees racism.”  He arranged for video and photos of Black men and women being attacked with dogs and water cannons to be shown on TV and in magazines.
Horrifying photos of racial violence showed the ugly truth of racism.

Horrifying photos of racial violence showed the ugly truth of racism and changed America's heart.
